How to lose your excess weight permanently

A lot of people across the world today are embarking on a health and fitness campaign for various reasons. Some of us want to look good and feel good about ourselves, that’s why we resort to dieting and exercise. Others want to prevent the onset of chronic illnesses and choose to make their health a lifetime investment.

Whatever your reason is for losing weight, you have to remember that this decision requires more than a fleeting engagement. You have to be totally committed to maintaining your health and your ideal weight in order to see actual and appreciable results. Motivation is also key to getting the results you want—if you really work hard enough at achieving your ideal weight and health condition, then nothing should stop you from doing so.

Here are some tips to get you started towards a slimmer, healthier you:

  1. Start by knowing your basal metabolic rate or BMR.

Your BMR reflects how the minimum number of calories your body needs to maintain its daily life functions such as digestion, breathing and sleeping. Solve for your BMR using this formula:

Body weight in lbs x 15 +(moderate activity [minutes/day] x 3.5) = BMR.

And since you do want to trim your waistline, subtract 500 kcal from your total BMR. This will give you an idea of how much you need to lose by doing different activities and restructuring your eating habits.

  1.  Change your lifestyle.

If you’re serious about whipping your body into shape and keeping fit for the rest of your life, you should really consider about changing your lifestyle in order to match the pace of your eating habits.

Dieting isn’t a fad or a phase in your life that will soon pass—it’s a real commitment to crafting a better body for yourself.  Think about what you want to change in your day-to-day activities and habits. Work at making real changes so you’ll know exactly what steps to take in order to meet your objectives.

  1.  Plan your diet and aim for realistic goals.

Don’t tax yourself by setting extreme weight loss goals, like staving three inches off your waistline in just one week. Such an objective will only serve to confuse and stress you out about your entire fitness program.

The purpose of keeping fit is to enable your body to function in tiptop shape. Now, if you try too hard at making milestones too early in your program, you will only end up frustrating yourself. Chances are, you won’t meet your goals and you will gain more weight.
